3 Ways to Create Compelling Business Stories

Written by Cindy Ashton

Looking at this picture of me performing, the visual instantly tells you a story -- it gives you a first impression.

Imagine if you could tell a story that inspires people to follow you, rave about you and buy from you….

Storytelling in your business is one of the fastest ways to build a truthful connection, be memorable and build your brand voice.

But…

Most People THINK they are telling stories in their business...

But are those stories moving people into action? Are they buying from you? Following your direction? Spreading the word about it?

If not, there is room to elevate your storytelling to the next level.

I always tell my clients "SHOW don't tell."

And when it comes to storytelling, entrepreneurs, speakers and business professionals really miss the boat on this.

Why?

They simply tell a linear story, sharing what happened instead of crafting it into a journey.

You want people to FEEL it and SEE it… and not be told.

Do you like being told what to do? Probably not.

If someone captivates you with a compelling story, do you lean in and want to know more?  Absolutely!

In your stories, it is essential to incorporate these 3 tactics:

Start with an attention-grabbing opener

People have very little attention spans which is why the first thing you say needs to make them want to lean in and listen.

For example, “It was him. The man who saved my life.” It makes you want to know “who?” and “what happened?”

Give them memorable visuals

When crafting your story, choose a few parts in the story where you can create very specific visual snapshots that people remember.

For example, when I tell my “Chicago bathroom singers” story, people always remember the snapshot of the woman bending over the toilet with her butt sticking out of the bathroom stall as she is singing, “R-E-S-P-E-C-T.”

Make them feel an emotional connection

One way to do this is by sharing your own journey and taking people through the emotions you went through. Be sure to be relating it back the audience as you are sharing so they feel included in your journey.

Action step:

Next time you write a social media post, play with integrating at least one of these ways to tell a compelling business story.
